If the relatives intend to dispatch the human remains of Sri Lankans deceased to Sri Lanka for the burial/cremation, it is required to obtain prior approval from this Embassy.
If the relatives intend to bury/cremate the human remains of Sri Lankans deceased in Italy, they are also required to obtain a prior approval from this Embassy.
Therefore, whenever the death of a Sri Lankan occurs, the relatives are instructed to contact the Embassy giving following details in writing:
- Passport copy of the deceased
- Death certificate/post- mortem report/permit to burial letter etc. issued by the Italian authorities
- Contact details of the immediate relatives of deceased living in Italy (preferably two names with telephone numbers)
- Contact details of the immediate relatives of the deceased living in Sri Lanka ( preferably two names with telephone numbers)
Upon receipt of above information, the Embassy will inform the death to the Consular Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka. Thereafter, the Consular Division of the Ministry will contact(as per information provided by the informant) one of the relatives in Sri Lanka and obtain an affidavit from him/her and send it to this Embassy along with their instructions.
Upon receipt of the instructions from the Consular Division, the relatives /friends of the deceased in Italy will be informed by this Embassy to proceed with the arrangements.
Please note that in cases of death all letters, certifications, translations etc are issued by this Embassy, free of charge.
The immediate family members should bear all cost pertaining to the burial/cremation of the human remains in Italy or for the dispatch of human remains to Sri Lanka.
Please note that the original passport of the deceased needs to be immediately handed over by the relatives/informants to this Embassy for cancellation.
