Registration of Marriages of Sri Lankans
- Please submit all the original documents of both parties along with a photocopy of each
- You may fill the application in English if you wish the Marriage Certificate to be written in English as it is convenient to use in Italy.
- Please arrange all the originals and the photocopies in the following order making separate sets for the Male Party and the Female party.
Required Documents
Passport
The relevant document or documents from the followings which contain Marital Status:
- (If divorced) Original Divorce Certificate – Both Nisi and Absolute orders issued by the competent authority which is relevant to the Marriage:
– Sri Lankan Divorce Certificates should be authenticated by the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka
– Divorce Certificates originated outside Sri Lanka should be certified by the Prefettura or certified by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the relevant Foreign Country. - (If Widowed) Original Death certificate of the spouse.
– Sri Lankan Death Certificates should be authenticated by the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka
– Death Certificates originated outside Sri Lanka should be certified by the Prefecttura or certified by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the relevant Foreign Country - (If Non-Sri Lankan) No Objection letter issued by the Embassy of the Foreign Country in Italy with the certificate of Prefettura or certified by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the Foreign Country
- If any Sri Lankan party who possesses residence in another country). Martial Status Certificate issued by the Embassy of the Foreign Country in Italy with the certificate of Prefettura or certified by the Sri Lankan Embassy in the Foreign Country
- (If divorced) Original Divorce Certificate – Both Nisi and Absolute orders issued by the competent authority which is relevant to the Marriage:
Birth Certificate
Stay Permit (SOGGIORNO)/ Visa, if available
Italian Identity Card/ Residence Certificate/ Proof of Address
Sri Lankan National Identity Card (Optional)
Self Affidavit on Maritial Status (Only for Sri Lankans)
Passport copies of the Witnesses for each party with proof of Address(To be faxed or emailed to the Embassy before 3 working days and originals should be submitted on the date of Registration to avoid later changes)

Relevant Fee : Euro 45.00 for the Marriage Registration and Euro 40.00 per each Affidavit
Registration of Marriages between Foreigners and Sri Lankans
The current procedure of registration of marriages between a foreigner and a Sri Lankan under the (112 chapter of) marriage (General) Registration Ordinance was based on the following documents obtained from the foreign party of such marriage:
- Valid Passport
- Certification of Confirmation of Civil Status (Divorced papers/ Documents for Confirmation of Widowed where necessary)
- Certificate of Birth (Only if needed to Confirm the birth date)
- Security Clearance Report from the security authorities (obtained within six months) OR Original of the license issued by the Registrar General
- Self – declaration of the health condition (Health Declaration) for the confirmation of the health conditions from the relevant foreigner.
****** Original Copy of the certificate obtained from the security authorities of the relevant countries, should be sent to the Civil Registration Unit of the Department indicating that there is no any convict for any offense during the period of six months.
Obtaining the “Security Clearance Report” of that person will proceed through the department. A license will be issued to register such marriage by the Registrar General. The request can be sent to : mbd@rgd.gov.lk
